Sunrise began in 1961 as Sunrise Golf Village, a development by Norman Johnson, and it is probably best remembered for the upside-down house he built as a sales gimmick on West Oakland Park Boulevard. The city grew steadily westward through the 1970s and 1980s on drained land, adding the villa and single-family neighbourhoods that make up most of its housing today. Sawgrass Mills and the arena arrived much later, on land that had been left empty at the western edge — which is why the commercial core sits so far from the older residential streets.
